Meeting with the Editor!

Editor-in-chief might be the highest position on publication staffs and it is not so easy job. You may need high time management skills, strong decision-making and lot of passion for the job.

Last November 18, 2012, half-confident and half-nervous I came in Discover Philippines magazine office at West Ave. Quezon City with my camera on the compliance to the set date of my meeting with the editor, Mr. Oliver Quingco II. With the welcoming office ambiance, he friendly accommodated me to sit and start the interview I requested on him in email. Well, I’m still feel so intimidated on this opportunity to have a one-on-one interview with the magazine’s editor-in-chief. However, I should not let this chance passed.

Mr. Quingco graduated of Art Studies in University of the Philippines in 1994 and became lifestyle journalist in Manila Times before he held the job in Discover Philippines, a travel magazine. Currently, he was the editor-in-chief and I am so fortunate to listen how magazine thing works.

Things we need to talk about.
You should work hard to maintain your responsibilities well done. He described the duty as a father who oversee all things in its household and provide source for the magazine to work.

“Mahirap s’ya in the sense na para kang tatay sa bahay, may asawa, may mga anak, may helper sa bahay, tapos ima-manage mo ung schedule ng lahat, tapos ‘ung budget ng lahat. [Kung] may coverage, mag-a-allot ka ng budget, at kung kulang ang budget nyo, maghahanap ka ng mga sponsors at ng advertisers.. so para nagma-mange ka ng isang bahay.”

He added that editor-in-chief should be strict on every deadline because it will affect the relationship of your magazine and the advertisers. It is the main challeges in print industry, most especially to the newly debuted magazines. “Mahirap kumuha ng advertisers kung hindi pa kilala ang magazine mo,” he stressed, “so kailangan kung sinabi mong lalabas ito [magazine] sa ganitong petsa, kung ano ‘ung prinamis mo sa advertisers mo, gagawin mo (s’ya).. Para hindi sila mawala sa’yo.”

However, there’s a lot of advantages to work for a magazine, most especially in travel magazine. “Masarap sa travel magazine kasi… nakakalakwatsa ka, part kasi ng job mo iyon, tapos ang gumagastos ng lakwatsa mo ay ang company…so marami kang nakikilalang tao tapos idi-discover mo kung anong food ang meron sa lugar na ‘to…marami kang mae-experience.”

Working on the field you’ve always wanted might brought you self-satisfaction. “Personal satisfaction s’ya kasi nakikita mo ‘ung efforts mo, makikita mo sya in print kasi… accredit sa’yo e, whether writer ka, photographer ka, or artist ka.”

Obedience and believing in work ethics are the main frame in doing the job. And if you worked hard for it, you may also achieve his success.

God's Workmanship!

mood: pleased

In the world, we conforming ourselves in evil desires because of our ignorance in Christ.
In Spiritual life, we decided to follow Him so we should set ourselves to be Holy, for we our called to be Holy.
(from 1Peter1:14-15) (ff: 1Thess2:11; 1Timothy4;8; Hebrews 5:13-14)

We are now free in the slavery of sin and because God have His Grace poured on us, we can hold to His eternal promise.
We SHOULD keep in mind that we are no longer live to sin, keeping its evil desires and set our body as instrument of wickedness, but rather offer ourselves to God. We are now live in Him who brought us from death to life through Jesus Christ. We should set ourselves as instrument of righteousness. (Romans6:11-13)

Because of our participation in the resurrection of Christ, through Baptism, we should consider our old self being died on the cross and we are no longer slave of sin. (Romans6:5-6)

We are God's Workmanship!
God still working in us,
God prepared things for us, its according to His plan,
until we reach the day of the Lord's coming.
(Eph2:10)

On the Go!

mood: determined determined

As we received Christ, we should continue to live in Him.

Through whom we've been forgiven by His blood, chosen us for the plan of God's Will and made known to us the mystery of His perfect Will.

Stand firm to our foundation which is in Christ, strengthen our faith by knowing Him more and acknowledge thankfulness in Him who brought us Hope for eternity.

We gained peace in God and experienced endlessly Grace from Him.

(Colosians2:6-7; Romans5:1-5; Ephesians1)

-Quiet time (Walking in Christ)

Stepping Forward.

mood: determined determined

There's no such INSTANT maturity in Christians.
It is not about in just one click we became a good and awesome servant for the Lord. It is a decision to change our nature into Christ-like.

Becoming a Christian is a life long process of knowing and loving God more.

1st step toward maturity is to put your faith in Christ Jesus!
-through whom we experienced forgiveness of our sins and we understand how great God's love and grace was.
(Romans5:1; John15:4; John11:25; John8:12)

God's desire for us is to unite in faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God, and become mature, attaining the whole measure of.Christ. We should speak the truth in Love and grow up in Christ! (Ephesians4:11-16)
"My position is in Christ.
My condition is becoming like Christ .
My expectation is to be like Christ."
Pursue to be righteous before God, It is a EVERYDAY decision to be make.
We should not focus on other things..
but rather set our minds to become like Christ, so the in the future, we will be appear in Him.

Not yet...

I just try to find a place to have a deep and serious conversation with God.

Yes,I found a nice place that can provide enough light for me to read my Bible and wrote whatever thought during this silent retreat.

I tried to focus myself but I'd easily got mad for those who made noise when they walked beside me. I was distracted. I'd prayed and prayed to God to make me concentrate for our conversation, but it didn't worked. I tried to find a suitable place again and again then I finally settle myself on the stairs that I can easily see th stars. I try to control myself, try to focus on the silence, enjoying the view above and let God talk to me.

I just wondered why I can't hear anything inside of my heart. Just nothing except on those noisy people on my far left side. I read my Bible again once more, any verses ( I believe that it would reflect my situation ) but I couldn't understand it although I knew what the story was all about.

Confuse, so I looked again at the stars. I hear something that disciples me about my attitude towards someone that made noise. Suddenly, I thought and realized that I was already disturbed by my surroundings and let it destroy my focus.

God's word is everywhere, but I let those nonsense things to be my priority to look at. I realized that lately I'm already disturbed by the trends of the world that hinders me to grow more in a deeper relationship with God. Although I must be transformed and renewed my mind, I can't help myself to fall and do those whatever norms created by this world. God let it happen for me to realized the situation that I'm facing nowadays. I'm not yet turned and fall away.

Not Yet...Though I have fallen I will rise and shall come back to my light. I will...

Things gets me bored

There some things that I force myself to do, even if i don't feel like doing it,
and it get me bored!
I can't help myself to avoid boredom and have a little patient to control myself, especially it get me sleepy. :)

These are the following:
-Studying topics that can't catch my interest. (for example: finance and economics)
-Traveling That I can't view the sceneries outside. I always want to sit on the window side of the vehicles
-I love to research but not in doing essay especially in English. I don't have any choice because I'm currently studying journalism.
-I get bored if I'm in the place where I think I'm not belong and out-of-place. UUWI NA AKO!
-I get bored if I do things that I know I don't have a heart to do it.
-It gets me bored if I'm on a lousy discussion in an open forum or inside the class room.
-Before I hate reading English books/novels/etc., especially when it is so long to read. But when I started reading Harry Potter, I somewhat love it. For now, I can stand to read novels (Harry Potter!!) and some English articles.
"Ayoko lang ng paligoy ligoy para mapahaba lang ang istorya."

ain't no rock?

Hindi ako makawala sa kamay
na pilit akong hinihila pababa,

Ginugusto kong tumayo
ngunit lalo lamang akong bumabaon.

Tennis vs. Badminton

Only badminton was introduced on me, since then. My father used to buy us a set of badminton racquets so that we can play badminton on free times. I don’t have any idea about tennis before.

I just started to have an idea about tennis when I watched a cool anime "Prince of Tennis" and my most favorite Taiwanese drama "It is started with a kiss" where the characters played tennis and I’m became avid fan of this sport. I admired the ways how to play it and it obviously has much difference from badminton. On tennis, I think, is harder and more challenging to play than badminton. Also, the ball of it was a bit harder to control. The thought of playing tennis bring excitement in my veins.

Mostly on summer, badminton is one of the most played games on our country. Streets usually filled with adolescents or kids played badminton. Badminton can be done freely without its net, unlike Tennis (As I observed), it can’t be played outside its court. Undeniably, this two sports were psychologically became social status. Playing badminton is more affordable than tennis, because its gears and stuff can be easily afford unlike tennis, as I interview one of the members of a tennis club, are costly.

Even this two sport can be done with racquets, it has difference,..... a huge difference.

Vocaloid

Doesn't know how to sing, or even play an instrument? But can compose lyrics. Here's a software for you, it's free to download if you know where the torrent of this software kidding aside, it helps aspiring composers to create a song, sung by different vocaloids.

Vocaloid is a singing synthesizer application software developed by Yamaha Corporation that enables users to synthesize singing by just typing in lyrics and melody.

Some famous Vocaloids are:

MEIKO is a Vocaloid DTM (Desktop Music) software created by Crypton Future Media. She is the first Japanese vocaloid and first Japanese female Vocaloid, she utilizes the Vocaloid engine developed by YAMAHA. Her voice is provided by the Japanese female singer Haigō Meiko. The illustration was done by Shogo Washizu, who is often called (Wasshi) and was once a member of Crypton.

Hatsune Miku is the first Japanese Vocaloid2 in theVocaloid2 Character Vocal Series created by Crypton Future Media. It is considered as the most popular and well known Vocaloid and the first to become a pop idol. The name of the title and the character of the software was chosen by combining Hatsu (first), Ne (sound), and Miku (future) thus meaning "the first sound from the future." The data for the voice was created by sampling the voice of Saki Fujita (Fujita Saki), a Japanese voice actress.

Kagamine Rin & Len  is the second product released on December 27, 2007, they are Vocaloid2 Character Vocal Series developed by Crypton Future Media Ltd. (CFM), male voice (Len) and female voice (Rin). Their family name was from the developing code combining Kagami (mirror) and Ne(sound).

Megurine Luka  was the third Japanese Vocaloid2 from Crypton and released on January 30, 2009.[1] Her surname combines Meguri (circulate or around) and Ne (sound), while the name Luka invokes the homonymous Japanese words of "nagare" (flow) and "ka" (song) or "ka" (scent); thus making "songs to all around the world as scent spreads." Yū Asakawa provided the voice for the "cool, somewhat mysterious" character.

Throughout the years, we have all watched with awe and mouths agape at the many impressive Martial Arts Movies.  No matter how clichéd or unusually mind-numbing the plot or the characters are, we never really cared much as long as the moves of the protagonists (or the antagonist, in that respect) are impressive, OR seemingly death-defying.
We all (well, the elders mostly) have witnessed how the formidable Bruce Lee knocked out hundreds of his enemies with his fists, legs and feet, whether he has a shirt on or not.
We all watched with astonishment as the incredible Jackie Chan performs stunts that I cannot hope to perform even if my whole family’s lives depended on it.
Or how about Donnie Yen—the one who so famously portrayed Ip Man (Bruce Lee’s master) in his recent movies? With his hands, we can forget about clumsy machine guns in modern warfare as his fists are fast enough to match even the fastest of ancient machineries called guns. Also, with him around, we can forget about action stars riding the fastest cars, because he has fast, bullet-like moves that could stop dead even the impossibly larger opponents!
Now, enough of that, I did not write this to mindlessly quote all of my favorite martial artists—I wrote this to tell about the things I’ve learned so far with the Arts.

What are the Martial Arts?
As some word experts would automatically tell you the etymological origin of the word, (Martial—meaning: of or relating to the military; Art—meaning: any manifestation of beauty) martial arts are far too beyond that.
The first martial art in the world was born in China—the incredibly formidable Shaolin Kung-Fu. This form were taught and learned by monks who swore that they would only use the Art in times of dire need and to protect the weak from evil.
In our present times, there now exists more than a hundred forms of martial arts that—if the Chinese are to be believed—were engendered from the Shaolin. True or not this piece of information may be, (as historical sources are also uncertain) we must hand it to the Chinese as they have been, if not always, the pioneers in the innovation and preservation of the venerable Arts.
Now, let us take a closer look to some of the most familiar and legendary forms of the Arts. Though, as said before, the Chinese are the pioneers in the Arts, there were also some countries that had created their own styles and managed to get them almost as well-known as the Shaolin Kung-Fu.

The Formidable Karate
The Karate is an indigenous martial art developed in the Ryukyu Islands (now Okinawa) of Japan. This technique focuses mainly on striking but also makes use of grappling and locks in order to perform attack reversals. The practitioners of this Art are called Karateka.
I remembered how my father used to tell me that my grandfather was a black-belter karateka and he once took on 10 men (your regular tambays in streets that have nothing to do better in their lives but to start a brawl) at once and lived to tell the tale…. Do I believe it? yes, yes I do. For even now, at the age of 63, my grandfather is still in top shape and could still lift heavy weights.
The Karate had been also very famous as many Hollywood movies depicted this Art as the central plot device (Karate Kid, for one, comes to mind). Also, a lot buffed action stars as Jean Claude Van Damme, Tom Cruise, and Liam Neeson practice this Art.
As said before, the Karate focuses mainly on striking, meaning that it uses punching, kicking, elbow, and knee strikes for attacking. Karate came from two Japanese words—Kara meaning ‘empty’ and Te meaning ‘hand’, thus, Karate is an ‘empty hand’ style of combating.

Next up is the powerful secret weapon of the Thais—the Art of the Eight Limbs—the Muay Thai. The Muay Thai, very much like the Karate, focuses on striking. Having that, Muay Thai is not very much like Karate for Muay Thai is much more flexible in using the body parts for striking the opponents. This Art had also been famous as several countries are already adopting it style. An example of another Art that was derived from this is the Yaw-Yan of the Philippines, otherwise known as the Dance of Death.
I’ve had not much experience with the Muay Thai, but observing the training of its learners, I would say that this Art is for hardcore lovers of Martial Arts as practices are totally intense.
Famous practitioners of this Art are Tony Jaa, Buakaw Por, and Pramuk, Alexey Ignashov, Daniel Ghiţă, Gökhan Saki, Diesel Noi, Apidej Sit Hrun, Ramon Dekkers, Saenchai Sor Kingstar, Yodsanklai Fairtex.

The Placid Wushu
For our last feature martial art, we bring you back to China as we would now learn about its most popular and most engaging sport—Wushu. Don’t get irritated if you ask a practitioner of Wushu what is his martial art and he answers, with a smirk on his face, “martial art”. Because fact is, he is just telling the truth. Well, the translated truth. Because Wushu literally means ‘martial art’ when translated into English (Wu = military/martial and = art)
Unlike the first two, which were mainly martial arts, the Wushu is a sport, an exhibition, and of course, a martial art.
Being a sport, China hosts a lot of Wushu competitions annually and gives out handsome prizes to those who win.
Also an exhibition, Wushu is also a competition wherein practitioners show-off their most remarkable, most gravity-defying moves in order to win the hearts of the audience, impress the judges, and take the grand prize.
Lastly, being a martial art, we could say that Wushu is the calmest type mentioned in this feature as it does not use aggressive striking moves. Instead, it uses acrobatics and other evasive moves and reversals in order to vanquish the opponents.
Wushu competition events include:
a. Barehanded
Changquan (Long Fist)
Nanquan (Southern Fist)
Taijiquan (or Tai chi chuan) (Taiji Fist)
b. Short Weapons
Dao (knife)
Jian (double-edged sword)
Taijijian (Taiji double-edged sword)
Nandao (Southern single-edged sword)
c. Long Weapons
Gun (Staff)
Qiang (Spear)
Nangun (Southern cudgel)

Anyone is free to join, given of course that they have knowledge of the Art.

There you have it. These three martial arts are but only the few among the famous other martial arts out there. You, my dear readers, the prospect learners of the Art, are free to choose which you want to study. Just remember that having knowledge of such arts does not entitle you to bullying nor does it exempt you from any law your country may have against physical injury, homicide, murder, etc. And to cut the long story short, practice wisely and use thy knowledge for the greater good.
